The Legacy of Scam

You all have heard or watched movies related to scams, like Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, The Wolf of Wall Street, and a very recent release, Lucky Bhaskar. All of these are amazing, and audiences can’t get enough of them since it exposes the very complex and convoluted world of financial deception in India as well as worldwide. From meteoric rises to crashes, these narratives describe the rise and downfall of criminals in the country, such as Harshad Mehta, sometimes reaching even further back into history, recounting explosions due to corporate scams, illustrating the dark underbelly of greed, betrayal, and the like. Ramesh Bhonsle’s story is nothing less than this: it narrates how a charming persona could cover trade secrets under falsehoods and fortunes built on falsehood. Much like those shown in Lucky Bhaskar and other blockbuster shows, his life’s story featured ambition, fraud, and one ultimate price for betrayal.

The Promise

In the narrow, sun-burn lanes of Kothrud, Maharashtra, Ramesh Bhonsle was a name everyone trusted. Every morning, he would sit outside his modest office on a weathered wooden chair, sipping his hot chai, his eyes scanning the horizon. His face was always lit with the kind of warmth that made everyone in the neighborhood feel like family.

Why let your money sleep in banks when it can grow faster here?” he would say with a smile that was as reassuring as it was irresistible.

It wasn’t just the farmers, shopkeepers, or even retired teachers who came to him—his charm reached the hearts of everyone in Kothrud. In return for their savings, Ramesh promised them something too good to be true: he would double their money in half the time it would take for a bank to do. And for years, it worked.

Every week, Ramesh’s clients handed over their hard-earned money, trusting him with their futures. They believed in his words, in his promises, and in the image of a man who only sought to help them. Behind the scenes, however, the operation wasn’t what it seemed. There was no real investment—no clever scheme. Just a man with a ticking time bomb of deceit, carefully calculating when it would all come crashing down.

His two sons, Vikram and Arjun, watched from the sidelines. At just 15, Vikram had started to follow his father’s example, already adept at charming people and learning the ropes of the business. Arjun, however, was more cautious, always questioning the numbers and the stories his father told. He was the quiet observer, wondering what would happen when the truth eventually came out.

One evening, after an especially long day of dealing with clients, Arjun couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Baba,” he asked, “what happens if they want their money back and we don’t have it?”

Ramesh patted him on the head and laughed. “You’ll understand when you’re older, son. This is about trust. They trust us, and that’s what matters.”

But Arjun wasn’t convinced.

The Collapse (First Scam)

By 2013, the inevitable happened. One summer morning, Ramesh’s office was locked, and the streets outside were filled with murmurs of confusion. The customers had begun to gather, wondering why they couldn’t reach him.

As the hours passed, they began to panic. No one had seen Ramesh. No one had heard from him. People who had entrusted their life savings to him were beginning to realize something was terribly wrong.

In the meantime, the Bhonsles were already miles away, driving out of Kothrud under the cover of darkness, heading toward Nayanpur, a sleepy town far enough from their past that no one would think to look.

The New Arena

The residents of Nayanpur welcomed the Bhonsles with open arms. Ramesh had already laid the groundwork for his new identity. He made small donations to the local temple and contributed to community events. Within months, he had established himself as a generous, God-fearing man. And in no time, he began the scheme again—but this time, with a new name and a more polished approach.

Vikram, now in his mid-twenties, became the public face of the operation. His charm and smooth-talking ways made him the perfect person to deal with clients, who never suspected that the same scheme was in motion. Arjun, now a little older and more involved in the business, had grown uneasy. Something didn’t feel right. The same cycle was repeating itself. But when he voiced his concerns, his father simply shrugged it off.

Son,” Ramesh said one evening, “we’re not running. We’re building something important here. This will be your legacy one day.”

Arjun didn’t know how to respond. The legacy of fraudulence was not one he wanted to inherit. But Vikram, his elder brother, didn’t understand the hesitation. For him, it was just business. Bigger risks meant bigger rewards (Ishq hai to Risk hai).

As the years passed, the Bhonsles’ scheme grew larger, and so did the trust people placed in them. By 2024, the Bhonsles’ operation was worth ₹25 crores, and Nayanpur had become a town where everyone—young, old, poor, or wealthy—turned to them for financial security. But with success came cracks in the foundation.

Payments began to be delayed. Clients started asking questions. Rumors spread that something was wrong. Arjun had been waiting for this moment—the moment the house of cards would collapse. And he feared that it was already too late.

The Escalation (Second Scam)

One particularly hot July night, the family gathered in their dimly lit living room. The air was thick with tension, and the sound of distant free-crickets filled the silence. Ramesh looked at his sons with a serious expression.

It’s time,” he said, his voice steady.

Arjun’s stomach twisted. “Time for what, Baba?” he asked, already fearing the answer.

We’re leaving!” Ramesh said as a matter of fact. “Things are starting to get too hot. People are asking too many questions.”

Vikram nodded eagerly. “We’ll pack it all, leave it quietly, and then nobody’s going to ever know.

This sank into Arjun’s heart, “What about the people we’ve wronged? The people who trusted us? What will they do when they find out?”

Ramesh’s eyes hardened. “Survival comes first, Arjun. It has always been.”

Vikram didn’t appreciate the gravity of Arjun’s words. “It’s not as if leaving them barren to die,” he said, they still have their homes and their lives. We’re just helping them get ahead.”

Arjun’s voice cracked, “That’s not true, Vikram. We’ve been stealing from them. It’s all a lie. And we’re just running away from the consequences.”

But his words had no effect. As the clock struck midnight, the Bhonsles loaded their belongings into a van and disappeared into the night. By morning, Nayanpur was left in chaos. The office was abandoned, the accounts emptied, and the once-trustworthy family was now a legend of betrayal.

The Betrayal (Scam within the Family)

Days turned into weeks. The people of Nayanpur—some in disbelief, others enraged—had filed police complaints and formed committees to search for the Bhonsles. They were surprised at their own stupidities and wondered at the way they were easily fooled.

The guilt weighed heavily on Arjun. He had executed his plans, but sitting alone now in an insignificant little house far from Nayanpur, the burden of what he had done pressed heavily upon him.

Vikram was already reading and thinking about their next move. “We’re going to rebuild. This is just a new chapter.” he said, eyes filled with all the excitement.

Ramesh was far more focused on his next steps. “We’ll start fresh, somewhere new. This time, we will do it much better.”

But Arjun could not rid his mind of that image of the aged couple who had given all they had, of the young man who had borrowed money to invest in their scheme, along with the rest who had trusted them.

That night, as Vikram celebrated their escape and Ramesh made grand plans for the future, Arjun found himself alone. He looked at the stacks of money, which his own eyes could count to twenty-five crores – ₹25 crores piled up on the table. These piles marked not just victory; the prize was that these had ruined lives.

Arjun picked up a picture from the table, a group photo when they had all come together for a community event organized in Nayanpur. Now the innocent smiles look so ignorant of the storm coming. He thought about them, their families, their dreams, and all the futures that had been snatched away.

The Reckoning (The Final Countdown)

For weeks after the heist, things were tense. Vikram and Ramesh had no clue about what had been going on inside Arjun’s mind. They were too wound up in their new-found freedom to notice his unease. But Arun, guilt was slowly eating his insides.

Once, Vikram came into the room with a bottle of whiskey and found Arjun sitting alone with his face lined with worries. “What’s your problem, Arjun? We’ve made it. We’re free now. No more looking over our shoulders.”

But Arjun’s eyes were filled with bitterness. “This is freedom? This is what you wanted? More lies, more people ruined?”

Arjun laughed bitterly. “We’re not free. We’re trapped in our own deception.

Vikram was struck with fear and knew about the rage in his brother’s voice. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Ramesh was listening to all these outside the room. Ramesh interrupted with anger, “Something doesn’t add up,” he muttered.

Vikram looked up. “What do you mean?

There’s money missing—₹10 crores,” Ramesh said, his voice rising.

Arjun’s heart raced, but he maintained his calm. “Maybe it’s a transfer that hasn’t cleared yet.

Vikram slammed the table. “Don’t play games, Arjun. You’ve been acting strange for weeks. Did you take it?

Arjun met his brother’s glare. “And if I did? What would you do, Vikram? Call the police?

Ramesh’s face turned red with fury. “You betrayed your own family? Where the hell is my money?

No, Baba,” Arjun snapped. “I did what you taught me—to survive. You think we’re building a legacy, but all we’ve done is destroy lives. I’m not going to run anymore. This ends here.

Vikram grabbed Arjun, but Ramesh held him back. “Enough!

Arjun stepped back, his voice calm but firm. “You two can keep running, but I’m done. I’ve left enough for you to start over, but I’m taking my share and walking away.

A Family Divided

As Arjun walked out of the house, he heard Vikram shout, “You’ll regret this!

However, Arjun did not look back. He was leaving behind more than family; he knew he was leaving behind a legacy of lies. Ramesh and Vikram watched him leave, their anger steady at a simmer.

What do we do now?” Vikram asked.

We rebuild,” Ramesh said, his voice cold. “And then he will pay for the disloyalty done to us.”

The Legacy Continues

Arjun, standing at a rail platform with a single bag over his shoulder, is about to loosen that horrifying grip from inside. As it approaches a terminal stop, the train roars in, illuminating the loud mix of cold chills and warmth that comes with freedom after the uncertainty thus ahead. That is what he would call his life.

Back at the safe house, it was all plotted out by Ramesh and Vikram, “What else of our rightful?” The story of the Bhonsle family does not end here. They have been broken by betrayal, due to which the web of lying is still left among them to meet face to face at some point.
